Industry 4.0: A Practical Study of How it Can Be Used to Improve Mill Performance

Everybody’s talking about Industry 4.0, but few can show documented cases demonstrating its value. This paper presents a pulp mill case study showing what can be achieved with it to improve the reliability of equipment and how this data can further help improve planning for shutdowns and supply chain efficiencies for spare parts.

During a routine Operator Driven Reliability programme inspection, the temperature of an electrical motor on a chipper was logged on a handheld device. This was automatically reviewed by the decision support system and an alarm was triggered. This alerted the operator and recommended a corrective action. It also sent an email to the Reliability Manager who called the onsite supervisor and agreed the corrective action. Action was taken immediately and a failure was avoided.

In this particular case, technology prevented a failure. In others, damage will have occurred, components will be degrading and they will ultimately have to be replaced. In such cases, it’s generally better to use scheduled planned shutdowns for repairs rather than risk unplanned stops or to plan additional ones.

Condition monitoring can detect developing failures and this information can be shared with purchasing, production and suppliers in order to proactively plan sourcing and replacement in order to reduce lead times and minimize costs.
