New Opportunities to Evaluate the HF Potential of Fibre Resources

Softness is defined as a multisensorial human perception. Former researches could show that the achieved softness of the hygiene product is strongly influenced by the choice of raw material. This paper describes the relation between fiber morphology of several market pulps and their softness potential. With this in mind, a laboratory procedure has been developed to observe for the first-time well known influences of different pulp sources on the softness of hand sheets. To achieve a high reproducibility the TSA from emtec was slightly adjusted and the hand sheet making was adapted. The investigation showed that expectations, such as the relation between strength and softness and the differences between long and short fiber sources, can now be observed on hand sheets. Furthermore, the fiber width distribution has proved to be a very important morphological property in terms of surface softness potential. The developed procedure opens up significant opportunities for investigation. This thesis already shows a glimpse of how refining influences softness and which fiber source might be more suitable. With the outlined procedure pulp producers might be able to develop their products further without the need of running an expensive costumer trail on a tissue machine.
